Today marked the first day of school after 2 weeks of school break. I was so tired that I can’t drag myself up from bed to prepare anything for the kids. One reason is because of the petrol hiked price. No motivation to go to work even and I almost didn’t want to update anything in my blog. Since morning, I just wish that the hiked price is just a dream. And that calculator keep on showing me the same figure. That figure! Even after the rebates of RM625.00 from the Government, I still need to fork out RM1.2k extra per year. *sigh…
Back to the topic, this is post dated Bento box I’ve prepared for Hubby since the kids is having a 2 weeks school break. The night before, I was thinking what type of adult food that is suitable to serve in a bento box. Since I have tiny (very very tiny) anchovies which I’ve bought from my previous trip to Pulau Ketam and organic cucumber lying in the fridge, I thought maybe I should prepare some ‘fake’ nasi lemak.
Rice – coconut milk = ‘Fake’
Which is the factor of a good nasi lemak? Should it be the perfection of rice or the sambal. I would say the sambal. However, the sambal didn’t do justice in the pic. I had the anchovies fried in oil till crispy and drizzled with some sugar. I couldn’t find a tea cup as the mould for the rice so I just the triangle onigiri.
For dessert, we had tulips watermelon. So childish can die!
For my portion, this is how my bento looks like.
I had a bigger serving cos this is gonna be my brunch. And that eggs…. this is resulted from the morning upside down timing I just love it like that. All mushed up! *bluek* Didn’t include the sambal in this pic cos I know they won’t turn out well.

Good thing the school holiday is here. At least my brain can take a 2 weeks break from all the mind cracking and sleep deprived too. Since I don’t have to prepare food for the school going kids, this time round, I’m going to pamper myself with all the ooo.. and ahh…
For the first time, this is Mummy’s bento consist of 3 mini egg tarts, cherries and chequered rose apple.

I made triangle onigiri using the sushi mould with a piece of pizza flavored sausage on the center. I also cut out a stripe from the nori sheet to wrap around the edge.
I know kids don’t fancy rice too much so I gave them more sausages on the skewer and some baby carrot. Far back is an orange.

Nothing fancy today. The kids each brought a piece of their Daddy’s birthday cake to school – jelly layered sponge cake and I still have pearl corn lying in the fridge. Decided to include more fruits to their diet so I just simply throw in some grapes.

To me, I would prefer to use a sushi mould rather than the bamboo mat. The reason is, with the mould I can never get the shape wrong as I am very fussy and particular to make sure all of them are in the same size.
You just need to scoop your vinegar rice in the mould and press them down.
Transfer rolled up rice to the nori sheet and viola, all done under a minute.
It is important to cut up the sushi with a very sharp knife to avoid any breaking.
All these are my children’s favourite food. They had edamame, pearl corn that we bought from Cameron Highlands and the sushi. Oh, just incase if you are admiring the flower, good thing is, it is edible! They are marshmallow actually. lol

The strawberries that I’ve bought from Cameron Highlands are really sour. So sour that one will shiver from the neck down to the spine! A sour strawberry is best eaten with whipped creme or blend them into smoothies. Well, this is MY way of making a healthy cup of strawberry milkshake.
Frozen some strawberry flavoured milk in an ice tray. Frozen a cup of low fat yoghurt too. Once set, place them in a blender with 6 pieces of fresh strawberries. Add sugar syrup according to your liking (optional). Blend ingredients till smooth.
There you go. Garnish and serve immediately.
Bento Mania #6
I have here rolled chicken ham, cheese and white bread. For dessert, strawberries and two pieces of jelly. Princess is thrilled when she saw the rolled up sandwich but refused to bring the jellies to school. Her reason was, “My Teacher say jelly is not nutritious. I cannot bring non nutritious food to school.” Grr….

This is what we called an octopus sausage. The next item that I am going to invest is a food colouring pen. It’s edible and not poisonous. How come those rare thing can only be found overseas except Malaysia? *sigh… Far back is a heart shape white bread with cheese. I guess this is just nice for the Mother’s Day theme. That’s the mummy octopus and Princess octopus. Prince octopus is hiding in another bento box. As usual la. Shy ma. *sticking out tongue*
Just in case if I don’t update tomorrow, Hijackqueen would like to wish all mothers A Happy Mother’s Day and please say hi to your Mom for me 😉 .
p/s: For Daddies out there, you know what to do la.

This is a three layered tuna sandwich & cheese. Something that is easy and quick to prepare on a rush Monday morning. What you don’t see in the picture is another 2 skewed sandwiches which was forcefully squeeze in that compartment later on so that Daughter will have enough for herself and also her classmate. (*sigh…). To compliment the bread, there is the Doremon strawberry yogurt drink

What is your reaction when your dotter came home and told you that she has been sharing her lunch with her classmate? Well, I did not want her to be selfish and at the same time, I want her to be aware of some classmate who likes to take advantage on people (like getting a feel meal!). And of course I asked if her classmate bring a lunch box too. The answer is yes but not as luxurious as mine! . Well, she also claimed that they have been sharing meals and her friend’s bread with honey is yummy. I almost puke. So from there onwards, I make sure I have something extra for her friend so that dotter will have a more fulling meal.
For this bento, I have some mini cupcake which I baked the night before, carrot sticks and dip.

I have 2 existing bento box at home – a 2 compartment bento and a 2 tier bento. But I want something that look sweet for my girl. I mean Princess! And of course I did some searching on the internet and saw quite a number of Hello Kitty face bento selling at US$9. Well, I was tempted to get them but decided to do more searching and also compare prices locally. And guess what? I went to a shop at my place and they had the same Hello Kitty bento box! I don’t even have to think about the price before buying. That is really a steal. From Japan somemore!
Well, at least the cute pinkish sissy Hello Kitty motivates me every morning. You know how I have to dragged myself at 6.45am. My next target is to get a 3 compartment bento box and I think I can stop buying after that. Hopefully…
Bento tray #2
The kids has these on a rush Sunday morning – Jacob’s cracker with tuna mayonnaise. Squeeze a lime juice on the tuna if you hate the fishy smell.
